{"id":1924,"date":"2012-05-04T12:08:30","date_gmt":"2012-05-04T16:08:30","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/therationalprogressive.com\/cms\/?p=1924"},"modified":"2012-05-04T12:08:30","modified_gmt":"2012-05-04T16:08:30","slug":"u-s-health-care-spending-dwarfs-that-of-other-countries","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/therationalprogressive.com\/cms\/2012\/05\/u-s-health-care-spending-dwarfs-that-of-other-countries\/","title":{"rendered":"U.S. health care spending \u2018dwarfs\u2019 that of other countries"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The United States spends more on health care than 12 other industrialized countries, a new Commonwealth Fund study finds \u2013 but that doesn\u2019t mean this country\u2019s care is any better.<\/p>\n<p>The U.S. spent nearly $8,000 per person for health care services in 2009, the study found, confirming that \u201chealth care spending in the U.S. dwarfs that found in any other industrialized country.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>David Squires, senior research associate at The Commonwealth Fund and the primary author of the study, found Norway and Switzerland were a distant second and third, respectively, on medical spending, at a little more than $5,000 per person.<\/p>\n<p>The study is an update of past analyses by The Commonwealth Fund that compare U.S. health spending with trends in other countries.<\/p>\n<p>The Commonwealth Fund concluded that this country\u2019s high price tag for health care isn\u2019t because of more doctor visits \u2014 the U.S., with an average of about four visits per person in 2009, ranked at the bottom for the number of doctor consultations.
