This is how he described Feinstein\u2019s bill:<\/p>\n<div class=\"img-wrap align-center width-fixed\"><a href=\"https:\/\/prod01-cdn07.cdn.firstlook.org\/wp-uploads\/sites\/1\/2016\/06\/igorv.png\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"aligncenter  wp-image-69803\" src=\"http:\/\/therationalprogressive.com\/cms\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/06\/igorv-540x293-1.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"352\" height=\"191\" \/><\/a><\/div>\n<p>It\u2019s hard to put into words how appalling that is. This CAP official is\u00a0not only outright lying about Feinstein\u2019s bill:\u00a0pretending that it bars \u201cterrorists\u201d \u2014 rather than people placed on\u00a0a suspicion watchlist \u2014 from buying guns.\u00a0Worse than rank dishonesty, he is literally, explicitly equating\u00a0people who will be deemed suspicious by the U.S. government \u2014 overwhelmingly Muslim, needless to say \u2014\u00a0with \u201cterrorists.\u201d As Sam Adler-Bell <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/SamAdlerBell\/status\/745036611356856320\">put it<\/a> about this tweet, \u201cReferring to all people on the DOJ\u2019s watchlist as \u2018terrorists\u2019 is legally incorrect and ethically ugly.\u201d In\u00a0Volsky\u2019s\u00a0mind, or at least in his propaganda, anyone deemed by the government to be suspicious is now a \u201cterrorist\u201d \u2014 no evidence needed, no trial held, no due process accorded.<\/p>\n<p>For eight years, this mentality was the driving force behind the worst Bush\/Cheney war-on-terror abuses. No matter what the extremist policy was \u2014 indefinite detention, warrantless eavesdropping, torture, no-fly lists, Guant\u00e1namo, rendition, CIA black sites \u2014 Republicans would justify it by saying it was merely\u00a0being done to \u201cterrorists\u201d and would accuse their due process-advocating critics of wanting to \u201cprotect terrorists.\u201d What they actually meant was that all of this was being done to people <em>accused<\/em> by the U.S. government of involvement in terrorism. But in their mind, \u201cgovernment accusations of terrorism\u201d were synonymous with \u201cproof of guilt.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>That is\u00a0<em>exactly<\/em> the warped, Orwellian formulation Democrats embrace: As is extremely obvious, the\u00a0Democrats\u2019 definition of\u00a0\u201cterrorist\u201d is \u201canyone whom the U.S. government suspects of being a terrorist.\u201d Just as was true of all those GOP abuses, what makes these Democratic proposals so dangerous is that they constitute a war on the most basic right of due process. Opinion<\/div><div class=csc_post_category>World<\/div><div class=csc_post_content><p><a href=\"https:\/\/news.vice.com\/article\/confiscations-deportations-and-vague-promises-europe-asylum-policy-shifts-again-1\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"aligncenter\" src=\"http:\/\/therationalprogressive.com\/cms\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/01\/uk-announces-10-million-pounds-for-unaccompanied-refugee-children-in-apparent-but-vague-compromise-1453986571.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"336\" height=\"335\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Thousands of refugee children across Europe are still\u00a0waiting to find out how a\u00a0new UK government pledge\u00a0on immigration rules will actually\u00a0alter their lives \u2014\u00a0as other countries across the continent also\u00a0struggle with the influx of migrants and refugees that is\u00a0showing no signs of slowing.<\/p>\n<p>In\u00a0Sweden, Interior Minister Anders Ygeman announced that as many as 80,000 migrants may be deported over the next few years if their asylum claims are rejected.\u00a0Ygeman said that around 45 percent of 2015&#8217;s\u00a0record 163,000 asylum seekers would likely be made to leave.<\/p>\n<p>Thursday also saw a\u00a0Dutch <a href=\"http:\/\/www.bbc.co.uk\/news\/world-europe-35426927\" target=\"_blank\">strategy<\/a> aimed at tackling the migrant crisis\u00a0put forward by Labour party leader Diederik Samsom, which\u00a0suggested the European Union (EU)\u00a0should begin sending sea arrivals back to Turkey from Greece. In return, the EU would\u00a0pledge to take between 150,000 and 250,000 refugees each year directly from Turkey \u2014 much less than the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.unhcr.org\/5683d0b56.html\" target=\"_blank\">1 million<\/a> that arrived to Europe by sea in 2015.<\/p>\n<p>This proposal reportedly has the support of Prime Minister Mark Rutte, but its implementation would depend on Turkey being considered a safe country for refugees \u2014 which most of the EU does not currently agree it is. In a statement, Amnesty International called the plan &#8220;morally bankrupt.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Last Tuesday saw Denmark adopt a law allowing the seizure of migrants&#8217; personal belongings. Thousands of local law enforcement departments and more than a dozen state police agencies began collecting traffic-stop information as a result.In the seven states with the most sweeping reporting requirements \u2014 Connecticut, Illinois, Maryland, Missouri, Nebraska, North Carolina and Rhode Island \u2014 the data show police officers are more likely to pull over black drivers than white ones, given their share of the local driving-age population.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">By itself, that proves little, because other factors besides race could be in play. Because African-Americans are, for example, generally poorer than whites, they may have more expired vehicle registrations or other automotive lapses that attract officers\u2019 attention.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">More telling, many researchers agree, is what happens after a vehicle is pulled over \u2014 especially whether officers use their legal discretion to search a car or its occupants and whether those searches uncover illegal contraband. An officer can conduct a \u201cconsent search\u201d without any justification if the driver grants permission. A search can also be made without consent if an officer has probable cause to suspect a crime.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">In the four states that track the results of consent searches, officers were more likely to conduct them when the driver was black, even though they consistently found drugs, guns or other contraband more often if the driver was white. Opinion<\/div><div class=csc_post_content><blockquote><p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.reuters.com\/article\/2015\/06\/30\/us-usa-security-nsa-idUSKCN0PA2G220150630\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"  aligncenter\" src=\"http:\/\/s2.reutersmedia.net\/resources\/r\/?m=02&amp;d=20150630&amp;t=2&amp;i=1060431301&amp;w=&amp;fh=545px&amp;fw=&amp;ll=&amp;pl=&amp;r=LYNXNPEB5T10F\" alt=\"\" width=\"396\" height=\"248\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">A new law, called the Freedom Act, which substantially reformed and narrowed the bulk phone data program, was signed by U.S. President Barack Obama a day after the existing program lapsed on June 1.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span id=\"midArticle_3\"><\/span>The Freedom Act also allowed the existing surveillance program to continue for a six-month transition period, but it remained in legal limbo pending Monday&#8217;s ruling by a judge of the Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Court.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span id=\"midArticle_4\"><\/span>&#8220;In passing the USA Freedom Act, Congress clearly intended to end bulk data collection &#8230; But what it took away with one hand, it gave back &#8211; for a limited time &#8211; with another,&#8221; wrote Michael Mosman, a judge on the surveillance court.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span id=\"midArticle_5\"><\/span>In his ruling, first reported by the New York Times, Mosman rejected the May ruling by the 2nd U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals in Manhattan that the Patriot Act had never authorized the NSA to collect Americans&#8217; phone records in bulk.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span id=\"midArticle_6\"><\/span>&#8220;Second Circuit rulings are not binding on the F.I.S.C. and this court respectfully disagrees with that court\u2019s analysis, especially in view of the intervening enactment of the U.S.A.
